Dr David Brophy, Lecturer in Modern Chinese History at the University of Sydney, discusses the distinctive historical traditions of the Manchus, and the place of Manchu culture and identity in the Qing dynasty.
Dr Brophy's research focuses on the social and political history of China's northwest, particularly Xinjiang and its connections with the Islamic and Russian/ Soviet worlds. His research interests further include the history of Qing and republican China, and early modern Eurasia.
