Who will be the next Pope? The selection process and what happens next

When a Pope dies or steps down, the new Pontiff is chosen by a group of cardinals who form a papal conclave or voting assembly. In a highly secretive process, they will vote by writing the name on paper and will continue four rounds of voting daily until a two-third majority is gained. The ballots are burnt after voting, with white smoke indicating they have picked the next Pope.
