WHOA DAD! GO DAD! - Episode 6: Featuring RJ Owen
Welcome to Episode Six with RJ Owen
(RJ’s Dad Stats: Four kids, elementary school-aged through high school)
RJ Owen is a UX Designer, a coffee nut, a Physics major, and a modest CrossFitter. He wouldn’t admit it, but he’s one of the funniest people I know.
After 10 years of working together with RJ to build the Denver chapter of CreativeMornings, and serving the Denver creative community, it’s fair to say that I’ve had hundreds and hundreds of hours of heart-to-hearts with this good man.
RJ and I served as each other’s co-hosts for an aggregate of six+ years out of the 10, and in that time we learned to dance, and riff, and be playful characters as we set the stage for brilliant speakers.
It’s RJ’s stable of wisdom, his thoughtfulness, his critical and creative thinking, and his generosity that have had me in deep admiration for a decade.
On fatherhood:
“I think the small things are the hardest -- I am always trying to be more patient, interruptible, calm, welcoming, and joyful with my kids. I think most of what it takes, maybe all of it, is being a steady source of present, calm, and supporting love for your children.”
Here are six key questions that we explore on Episode Six of WHOA DAD! GO DAD!:
1. What’s the value of being “interruptible” as a father?
2. How does parenthood bring up and accelerate our own personal growth opportunities? (and how to make time for that growth)
3. What’s the shift in the parenting mindset required when our kids go from middle childhood, into the teenage years?
4. How does our own upbringing and childhood experience shape our parenting style?
5. Where and how can we “throw our kids into the mix” of life, to teach them critical life and leadership lessons?
6. How do we teach our kids to know and then fight for what they believe in, and in turn make the choice to take on agency and responsibility in their life?
