Whomever He Wants for Whatever He Wants

Listen Later

Yesterday, as we began our study through 1 Timothy, we saw Paul refer to himself as "an apostle of Christ Jesus by command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope. Pastor Daniel encouraged us to remember Paul’s story—of how he went from being a persecutor of Christ and his church to a servant of Christ and his church. He then encouraged us to remember our story, of how God our Savior and Christ Jesus our hope took us from where we were—according to his will—and called us to a holy calling as his ambassadors. What we saw from the text yesterday, is that no one is too far gone for the Lord to save and use. From former country music pianists to the way of Jesus terrorists, God’s grace, mercy, and peace can transform anyone for his purposes and for his glory.
From today’s reading, we see this truth again—that God saves whomever he wants, sets apart whomever he wants, in order that they may do whatever he wants. Acts 13:2-3 says that “while they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” And although it was probably painful to see them go, knowing that they may never return again, they obediently fasted, prayed, then they laid their hands on them and sent them off.”
Paul will later say in Acts that when God saved him, he saved his once blind opponent in order that God might send him to the Gentiles “to open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in [Christ].”
From where has God taken you? And where has God placed you? Rest assured, disciple of Christ, that the answers to those questions are in line with the will of the Lord, are bathed in the blood of Christ, and have sprouted from his grace, mercy, and peace. Like Paul, God has taken you from darkness to go back into the darkness to open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in Christ.
