Whose Hands Are You Lifting Up? - Lessons from the Exodus

Listen Later

After our brief hiatus, we continue our series in Lessons from the Exodus.

In Exodus 17, the Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites. Moses told Joshua to fight boldly and He would stand at the top of the hill with the staff of God in his hands, along with Aaron and Hur. The text says, “As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. When Moses’ hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up - one on one side, one on the other - so that his hands remained steady till sunset. So Joshua overcame the Amalekite army with the sword.”

This is a powerful picture. Aaron and Hur holding the arms and hands of Moses up so that the battle would be won. None of us were meant to do life by ourselves. We were meant to be there for one another as we do the journey of life together. There are times when we need others to hold up our hands and there are times when we have the privilege of holding up the hands of others.

In the New Testament there are dozens and dozens of “one another” statements: Love one another, care for one another, forgive one another, encourage one another, help one another, and the list goes on. The common denominator is “one another” because we need one another.

We talk often about the goodness of God to us. And He is! But think about how He delivers his goodness. It is through other people who come alongside us, bear our burdens with us, enter into our suffering as one of us. In other words, We are the Aaron and Hur to others and they are those who support us. We are often the instruments to deliver the goodness and faithfulness of God to others. It is God who is good. It is we who deliver His goodness to others on a daily basis. And them to us.

As you walk through your week, think about whose arms God wants you to be lifting up. Ask Him to show you where you can be His hands and feet. If you ask, He will show you. Then step in and support those who need your support in the name of Jesus. Allow God to give you the opportunity to be his hands and feet and encouragement to those around you. We need one another.

Father, thank you for your amazing goodness. Help me to be the conduit of your goodness to others. Help them to see you through me. Amen.
