Welcome to the second episode of Fast Forward: The Post-Pandemic Innovation Podcast!

In this episode, we're sharing the playback of a recent webinar we co-hosted with the awesome team at Lair East (an accelerator specializing in blockchain and AI technologies), Reality Check: Why AI Has Failed to Live Up to Its Hype in this Pandemic and What Companies Should Learn from This, exploring why AI hasn't been as useful as other technologies in this pandemic and the important lessons we should learn from this.

Our panel guests included Alexandros Louizos, Vascular Surgeon and Managing Partner of AI company, ManXmachina, and Babak Hodjat, VP of Evolutionary AI at Cognizant. The panel was moderated by Charlie who explored the following topics with the panel:

• Why and how did AI fall flat during the pandemic? Why are scientists relying more on old-school methods like statistical techniques and mathematical models to create predictive epidemiological models, more than AI?
• Why are organizations like World Economic Forum posting warnings about the use and misuse of AI with COVID-19?
• How did the media's coverage of AI has contribute to creating unrealistic expectations about what the technology can do?
• How should we realistically manage our expectations of AI's immediate potential and what lessons and new strategies should companies and governments adopt from this unique moment in time that will have major implications for the future?

GUEST SPEAKERS

Alexandros Louizos, Managing Partner of ManXmachina LLC, is an ex-vascular surgeon, turned artificial intelligence expert, Founder of ManXmachina. Previously founded Galaxy AI, a VC funded artificial intelligence company automating car insurance claims and working with top 10 US car insurance companies. His company, ManXmachina, creates custom artificial intelligence solutions for companies that want to avoid the time lost and risk involved in hiring in house artificial intelligence teams and works with clients from finance, healthcare, real estate, and insurance. 

Babak Hodjat is Vice President of Evolutionary AI at Cognizant, and former co-founder and CEO of Sentient. He is responsible for the core technology behind the world’s largest distributed artificial intelligence system. Babak was also the founder of the world's first AI-driven hedge fund, Sentient Investment Management.  A published scholar in the fields of artificial life, agent-oriented software engineering and distributed artificial intelligence, Babak has 31 granted or pending patents to his name. He is an expert in numerous fields of AI, including natural language processing, machine learning, genetic algorithms and distributed AI and has founded multiple companies in these areas. Babak holds a Ph.D. in machine intelligence from Kyushu University, in Fukuoka, Japan.
