Why Ananse has Eight Skinny Legs
Ananse the spider was extremely greedy and loved tasting his friends' cooking without helping with chores. One day, he visited eight different animal friends who were all preparing dinner. At each home, he proposed the same trick: tying a web from his leg to their cooking pot so they could tug when the food was ready. By the time he finished visiting the rabbit, monkey, tortoise, hare, squirrel, mouse, fox, and hog, all eight of his legs were connected to different cooking pots. When the meals were simultaneously ready, all eight webs were tugged at once, pulling Ananse's legs in different directions. In desperation, he jumped into a river to free himself from the webs. When he emerged and dried off, Ananse discovered his legs had been permanently stretched from short and wide to thin and long—a lasting consequence of his greed and trickery.
