The Moon is seen as an ideal proving ground. NASA plans to build Artemis Base Camp on the lunar South Pole. The Moon's low gravity makes it much cheaper and easier to launch rockets into deep space than from Earth. Life support technologies and nuclear propulsion systems tested on the Moon will be key to future manned missions to Mars.
