The confirmation hearings for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh have been animated, to put it mildly. The circus-like atmosphere isn’t just a symptom of politics-as-usual. It’s an indicator that the American body politic has experienced some major shifts in how we perceive the role of our national government.
