Why Are They Called Wildebeests?

Listen Later

The wildebeest is a remarkable and iconic large antelope native to Africa. Standing between 45 and 55 inches tall at the shoulder and weighing between 300 and 600 pounds, these majestic creatures are a sight to behold. Their bodies measure between 5 and 8 feet in length, complemented by tails that span 14 to 22 inches. The Dutch settlers who first encountered them in South Africa were struck by their wild and vigorous appearance, naming them "wildebeest," which translates to "wildebeest." This name aptly captures their untamed nature and robust demeanor.
