What is the gap between what we think we know, and what we actually know? 

Most subject matter expertise requires a recognition as well as an appreciation of nuance.  In a world where the measure and complexity of information is constantly increasing, we are increasingly (and understandably) filtering the world  through our subjective opinions and cognitive biases.  One such bias is known as the Dunning-Kruger effect, which suggests that individuals who lack in expertise tend to overestimate their ability or knowledge in a subject, often with a deceptive level of confidence.  Simply put, experts tend to know what they don't know.  

This can lead us to develop inaccurate or even destructive mental models that can actually harm us, and those around us.
