Alcohol triggers the release of dopamine,
associated with pleasure and reward, but this dopamine hit is artificial
and not the same as natural dopamine sources such as spending time with
loved ones or engaging in enjoyable activities. The brain's reward pathway is
reinforced by alcohol, creating a desire for more, making it difficult to
stop after just one drink.

Social Factors and Peer Pressure:

When in social settings, the pressure to drink can be significant. Friends or
family can encourage you to have "just one more" or
put pressure on you to "let your hair down." This peer pressure can be sometimes be difficult to resist,
leading you to drink more than you initially intended.

Effect on Memory (Hippocampus):

The hippocampus is responsible for memory function. Alcohol affects
this part of the brain, which can lead to forgetfulness about the number of drinks
you have had. In busy social situations, it's easy to lose track of how much you have
had to drink.

Influence of Alcohol Advertising:

The drinks industry invests significant amounts in advertising to create an
image of alcohol as an attractive and essential part of life. These
advertisements portray alcohol as a solution for relaxation, confidence, and
stress relief. Such promotion may subconsciously influence people to drink more
frequently or excessively.

Impact on Mental Health:

Alcohol is a depressant, which means it can negatively affect the nervous
system and neurotransmitters in the brain. For individuals dealing with mental
health issues, using alcohol as a coping mechanism can be harmful, leading to
further complications and dependency.

Tips for Handling Social Situations:

To avoid giving in to peer pressure and drinking more than you want to in social

situations, it's essential to plan ahead. Having a prepared response ready,
when someone tries to cajole you into having another drink can help you stick to your plan.
