Your child is likely dealing with executive function disruption, which happens as a result of his or her trauma history. Our executive function abilities come from the pre-frontal cortex of our brain, and help us do things like carry out tasks, manage time, and stay organized among other things. And this is precisely the area of the brain that trauma impacts the most. Notice that we did not title this podcast episode "Why Won't My Child....." but rather, "Why Can't My Child...." That's intentional. Because the more you understand executive functioning disruption, the more you realize, your child's inability to complete tasks is due to the fact that they can't, not won't.
