This week we are going to look at the parable of "The Prodigal Son." Believe it or not it actually has a really cool connection to Eucharist or as we usually refer to it "Holy Communion." The story of the prodigal son is a reaction from Jesus to the way the scribes and Pharisees were grumbling about how Jesus was hanging out with sinners and tax collectors. Jesus actually tells three parables at that time. Two of the three focus specifically on how heaven celebrates when the lost are found. The third, "The Prodigal Son" includes a rebuke. We are going to take a quick look at why that rebuke should matter to us before we dive into how it connects us to Eucharist (Celebration).
The story Jesus tells is a story of love and betrayal. It is a message about how the world's lies distort even the purest love. And it is a story about God's never-ending love and faithfulness. In this story we learn about God's hopes for us and his pursuit of us. We learn about the cost of our freedom. And we see who pays that price.
Finally, we will look at how our Abba-daddy God has been calling us from the past, is calling us in the present, and is calling us from the future into an eternal and unbreakable relationship with Him. Come home.
