The phrase "help meet" appears in the Bible in Genesis 2:18, where the Lord says, "It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him". The Hebrew term for "help meet for him" is ezer kenegdo, which literally means "a helper suited to, worthy of, or corresponding to him". The word "helper" can mean a partner or ally. The Hebrew word ezers is translated into English as "help" in Genesis 2:18 and appears twenty-one times in the Old Testament. Ezer is a combination of two roots: "to rescue," "to save," and "to be strong". Outside of Genesis 2, the word "helper" in the Bible exclusively describes the way God himself helps his people.
