WHY DID THE U.S. ATTACK IRAN?
Hello, this is Darrell Castle with today’s Castle Report. This is Friday the 27th day of June in the year of our Lord 2025. Next Friday is the 4th of July so barring some catastrophe there will be no Castle Report next week. I hope you have that day off so you can celebrate Independence as Joan and I will. Today, I speak not of Independence but of war once again as I try to discern some of the reasons for the U.S. attack on Iran’s nuclear enrichment sites.
I will admit that the reasons for the actions of nations at this moment are normally nothing more than someone’s or a group of someone’s best guesses so I will make some guesses of my own today. The attack raised an important Constitutional issue because the Constitution gives only Congress the authority to declare war. That was just one example of the wisdom of the founders because the decision to go to war puts the entire nation’s survival at risk. Perhaps, in this modern era we are expected to think differently and see that this attack was not such a Constitutional question because the last time the U.S. followed the Constitution in going to war was December 1941.
Most politicians now on both sides of the aisle think and state publicly that the formal declaration of war is a relic of the past and just isn’t done anymore. So, we are constantly at war but nothing is ever declared and that is very convenient for those who love war. The two political parties have apparently reached a consensus to let the president handle the decision alone and afterward they can criticize or praise him at their leisure. It’s all just part of the theater of the absurd that we watch every day on our televisions or smart phones.
Technology and speed are completely different now than in the days of the founders or even 1941. In the early days a debate about going to war might take months and there was little or no chance your adversary could learn of it before you acted but now those decisions take microseconds. It seems that in government today there are simply no secrets despite any top-secret classification, except for the very important secrets like JFK, RFK, MLK, the Epstein files, and of course 9/11. Those are the things we normal Americans are not supposed to know.
For example, someone in the Pentagon or the defense intelligence agency leaked the top-secret bomb damage assessment or (BDA) of the attack which said it was unknown whether or not the nuclear enrichment capability of Iran survived the blast generated by 14 MOABs or mother of all bombs. A criminal investigation is underway to find the leaker. President Trump had previously told us that the nuclear sites had been “obliterated” by the bombing. When asked about it later he said that he got his BDA from Israeli Mossad agents who physically observed the sites. It turns out now that even the Iranians admit severe damage to the sites.
Wars tend to be worse than expected. The ones who enter them expect and hope that the duration will be short and victory will come decisively and quickly but then reality sets in. For example, one could say that the Ayatollahs have been at war with Israel and the U.S. for forty-six years or the entire time they have held power in the Islamic Republic of Iran. They constantly inflame their people and incite international fear by leading chants in the streets of Tehran of “death to America” and “death to Israel.” It’s not much of a stretch to believe that those two nations would see that as declaring open warfare and act accordingly. When someone screams for your death for 46 years perhaps you should consider paying attention because he might just be preparing the means to bring his ambitions into reality. That is one reason then for the attack i.e. to end the death to America threat.
The Iranian regime turns out to have been a farce all along. Much ado about nothing and what the North Vietnamese used to call America, just a paper tiger. It was the kind of country that reminds one of the movie sets you might see on a guided tour of the studio, all just fake. However, in the U.S. there seems to be a tendency to fear the worst in any situation and in the Middle East the worst seems to always have a way of happening. In other words, it’s a fine place to stay a long way from.
The reasons for the war are limited only by one’s imagination but one of the prime reasons, i.e. a justification for the attack, was an apparently false appraisal at the last minute by the international atomic energy agency (IAEA) which showed Iran could have a nuclear weapon within two weeks. It turns out that the report came not from boots on the ground but from an AI software on Palantir using a $50 million AI system to sift through all the data points available. That report gave Israel the cover that it needed for the attack and as it turns out the report was nothing more than inferred hostile intent, but it made Netanyahu’s decision to go to war justifiable.
Later, on June 17th after the attack by Israel started, the IAEA issued a statement through its head, a mister Grossi. “We did not have any evidence of a systemic effort by Iran to move to a nuclear weapon.” Iran foreign minister Esmaeil Baqaei on June 19,” This is too late, Mr. Grossi—you obscured this truth in your absolutely biased report that was instrumentalized by E3/U.S. to craft a resolution with baseless allegation of Iranian non-compliance; the same resolution was then utilized, as a final pretext, by a genocidal warmongering regime to wage a war of aggression on Iran and to launch an unlawful attack on our peaceful nuclear facilities.”
I’ve had a question since this started about the peaceful nuclear facilities and about the reports of no nuclear weapons and that question is if that is so why do you need to build your facility 80 to 100 meters underground and cover it with 25 meters of reinforced concrete. Peaceful level enrichment is fairly easy and fairly quick and very replaceable. However, I certainly understand Iranian anger at the false report and that is why the Iranian parliament reportedly has ceased cooperation with IAEA.
There is another reason for the attack, which like the others is probably false but maybe, just maybe there is truth in it. This reason comes to us from Gilbert Doctorow, world recognized Russia expert who has degrees from Harvard and Oxford on his resume. The report was mentioned by Paul Craig Roberts in a recent article and that is how I became aware of it and started researching Mr. Doctorow and his theories. He has a different theory from anything presented thus far.
Mr. Roberts reports Doctorow’s interpretation like this. He suggests that the purpose of Trump’s bombing of Iran’s uranium enrichment sites is to shut up Netanyahu and to preempt Netanyahu from attacking the Iranian nuclear facilities with nuclear weapons. As an alleged Iranian nuke was the official excuse of Netanyahu’s military aggression against Iran, Trump’s announcement of Washington’s destruction of the sites removed the justification for continuing Israeli aggression.
Mr. Doctorow went on to suggest that Trump immediately began hammering both sides for a ceasefire which was in Israel’s best interest because it was running out of anti-air munitions. Iran’s retaliatory strike against the U.S. base in Qatar, was part of the political theater intended to end the conflict. Mr. Doctorow, as Mr. Roberts put it, shows us a more intelligent Trump than he showed himself by only appearing to draw us into another endless Mideast war. Maybe he was right but time will tell.
I can think of another reason or perhaps it’s just a result of what happened and that is the demonstration to the world that Trump displayed. The secrecy maintained throughout, the deception of pretending to send the tankers and bombers west when they were going east, the incredibly awesome power of 7 B2 bombers flying from Missouri to Iran and back in 36 hours with 14 GBU-57 bombs on board, putting those bombs within one meter of the target from high above the earth, all without a single Iranian defensive aircraft taking off and not a shot fired against them, with not a single casualty except those inside the nuclear site holes.
That was indeed awesome and I can think of only one nation which could have pulled it off. In other words, suddenly Russia and China seem a little irrelevant and Russia’ s statements of support for Iran were just that, statements with nothing behind them. Trump made a demonstration for the world to see and I believe the world, despite the rhetoric, took notice. China is a little concerned right about now because it looks like Iran might be headed for regime change and that would be problematic for China since Iran is one of the crown jewels in the Chinese belt and road initiative to connect China with the world out of the reach of the U.S. Navy. This demonstration, then, told the Chinese the Navy might not reach you, but the Air Force will.
The vast amount of munitions expended in this brief war has to be replaced and just one small part of it is the Israeli aircraft primarily American. About 200 U.S. F-35 stealth jets were used to fly those early sorties designed to destroy the Iranian anti-air systems. They were airborne for hours and required much aerial refueling. Each F-35 costs $10,000 per hour for each hour of flight operations. This information is one tiny cost in the total package but it bodes extremely well for Lockheed (LMT) and its F-35 program also Boeing (BA) and its F-47 fighter on the way as well as Northrop Grumman (NOC) and its development of the coming large bomber the B-21. As I’ve often said, if you are a gambler bet on war and it’s really not much of a gamble.
In conclusion, folks, since December 7, 1941, we’ve had more than enough wars but not many victory parades or celebrations in the great capitals. Korea, Vietnam, Honduras, Nicaragua, Grenada, Kuwait, Kosovo, Iraq, Afghanistan, on and on so on and so forth. Trump had a chance to set a record for American presidents and time will tell if he did or not. He was the only U.S. president in the 21st century who had not started an expensive, pointless war. This one might turn out shorter, and cheaper than the others, we’ll see.
Finally, folks, Trump seemed genuinely upset, especially with Netanyahu for violating the cease fire he arranged. I see that as a good thing and I pray the ceasefire holds. We owe Trump a debt of gratitude for removing Netanyahu’s last excuse for war with Iran. Pray for peace folks whether you hate him or love him pray the ceasefire holds.
At least that’s the way I see it,
