Today we sat down with Darren Rainey.
Darren currently holds the position of Program Manager for Recruitment and Retention of Diverse Educators at Delaware State University, where he spearheads initiatives to attract, support, and retain a diverse educator workforce, with a particular focus on recruiting and nurturing Black male educators. In addition to this work, Darren leads the Master of Arts in Equitable Curriculum and Instructional Leadership program at Delaware State University, tailored for educators seeking to redesign the education system for equity, improve their curricular and instructional knowledge, enhance pedagogical skills in culturally responsive and anti-racist practices, and advocate for equitable classroom environments. Originally from Philadelphia, Darren pursued his undergraduate studies at Hampton University and obtained his Master of Arts in Teaching from Relay Graduate School of Education. His journey into education began after a career as a military officer in the U.S. Army. As a Teach for America Corps Member in Delaware, he transitioned into the classroom, teaching middle and secondary English. Throughout his career, Darren has taken on various leadership roles, including Athletic Director, Grade Team Leader, Instructional Coach, and Director of Curriculum and Instruction at Freire Charter School Wilmington. In addition to his full-time role, Darren serves as a Mindfulness and Leadership coach at Messy Roots, providing guidance to educators, education leaders, and non-profit leaders of color through the lens of mindfulness, adult social-emotional learning, and an Afrocentric paradigm.
