Why do we ready the Passion Narrative every year? (Good Friday)

Good Friday

Why do we read the Passion Narrative every year?

“It is because my sins are on his shoulder.”

  1. “My sins”: It is my sins that are on his cross, on his shoulder, not somebody else’s.
    1. Not only the sins of Israelites but also the sins of all peoples
    2. Not only the sins of the past but also of the sins of the present
    3. Jesus carries my own personal sins, not just anonymous sinners
    4. “are”: Jesus still carries his cross.
      1. The crucifixion of Jesus still happens ‘today’.
      2. Jesus still ‘suffers’ on behalf of me for the atonement of my sins.
      3. “his”: No one else but Jesus can carry this cross of redemption.
        1. He is the Mediator who is a true man. No other being but a true (the same essence) and a real (not virtually but verily present) human being can represent other human beings.
        2. He remained sinless despite all temptations and all weaknesses of humanity. In other words, Jesus remains always in the right relationship with God his Father. Only a mediator who is in good relationship with God can offer sacrifices on behalf of others who cannot approach God because of their guilts and sins.
        3. “For it is not as if we had a high priest

          who was incapable of feeling our weaknesses with us;

          but we have one who has been tempted in every way that we are,

          though he is without sin.”

          - Hebrews 4.15 (the Second Reading of Good Friday)
