John 4:21-24 tells us that the Father is seeking for us to worship Him in spirit and in truth. Why does God seek our worship? Could it be that God is a cosmic egotist, and that he needs our worship? Certainly not! In Acts 17:25-27 tell us God doesn't need anything from us. And yet is is close to us that we might seek and find him. So why does God seek our worship? Our six C-words provide a good answer.
Genesis 1-3 provide two perspectives on Creation. Chapter 1 shows us the big picture. Chapter 2 zooms in to a more personal account. God creates the world to provide all things for humanity. Genesis 3:8-9 inform us that God walked and talked with us in the cool of the day. He was there for us and allowed us to ask all of our why questions! He loved us, and gave time to us. Bring 1 John 4:19 to this conversation: "We love, because God first loved us." God's gift of himself and time was meant to teach us that we are loved, and this enabled us to love in return. This is the foundation for Genesis 1:26-28. We are created in the image of God. We are blessed to multiply and fill the earth. As we do so, we carry the image of God across the planet and extend the borders of the Garden of Eden to include our whole world. This is God's plan: We are created and loved to show God's goodness and kindness to the world.
The beginning of Genesis 3 informs us that humanity is tricked into trying to become like God by breaking one of God's commandments. Duh! We were already like God! Our enemy's short-cut tries to ruin God's plan and cheat us of God's love.
Here is the big idea: We worship when we recognize God's worth -- his worthship. Worship is a vital part of the transformation process God wants for us. It helps us become like the God we love. The bottom line? God seeks our worship because it is good for us and it helps us participate in his mission in the world.
