Why Does God Show Up When We Least Deserve It ?

Listen Later

It was 1 a.m. when I poured gasoline on the fire. Then someone by me whispered one word: “Bear.”

Four years ago, I was deep in the Idaho wilderness. No phone, no signal, no way out fast. Days earlier, I had joked that if a bear ever showed up, I would just outrun one of my friends.

Funny then. Not so funny when I jumped back in the dark, smashed my knee on a rock, and felt my foot break, five hours from the nearest doctor.

I still carry the metal in my knee. Airport detectors still find it. That night left a mark on my body I will never lose.

But this message is not really about a bear.

It is about the marks we carry. Some marks come from pain. Some from failure. Some from fear. Some from moments we wish we could rewrite.

In Genesis 28, Jacob is single and running for his life. He is not at his best. He is not praying a beautiful prayer. He is not standing in faith. He is broken, afraid, alone, and still carrying the consequences of his own deception.

So why would God show up?

Why would God speak to him?

Why would God give him a promise?

Before Jacob changes, God speaks. Before Jacob proves himself, God promises. Before Jacob has anything to offer, God marks him with grace.

Why?

Maybe you have wondered why God would come close to someone who does not deserve it. Maybe you have felt too far, too broken, too ashamed, or too late.

This sermon is for you.
