Every October 31st, something happens that has deep roots in queer history. Costumes, transformation, masks, and performance have always been a way for LGBTQ+ people to explore identity, and Halloween gave the community a culturally sanctioned excuse to do it openly, even when nothing else did.

Long before Pride parades became legal or mainstream, Halloween was one of the few nights a year when gender-bending and queer self-expression could happen on the street without immediate threat of arrest. The holiday became a space of possibility, joy, and visibility for queer communities across America, and in cities like San Francisco, New York, and New Orleans, Halloween celebrations grew into enormous, fabulous community events.
