I grew up in a major code-switching era. I remember listening to my mom, my aunts, my friends moms', changing the way they spoke in front of their coworkers and colleagues. And I remember thinking, this must be normal. It was a regular thing to switch off and on the different parts of me, depending on when and where I was, and who was around. I would be one person at church, a whole different person at school or work, and I could sort-of, kind-of be myself at home. But I was never myself. That wasn't allowed.
It wouldn't be until years and a worldwide pandemic later that I actually felt like I could be my full self. It would take a lot of slowing down and self-reflection, but I would get there eventually, and it would be the best thing I ever did for myself.
