Zhongye Dao is an important part of the Nansha Qundao group in the South China Sea. China has claimed indisputable sovereignty over it, but the Philippines occupied the island in 1971 and uses the presence of a military post, a civilian community and infrastructure to reinforce its control there. Beijing views it as an attempt to seize the island by creating a fait accompli.
