Why is Ownership Important in DFS on DraftKings

Listen Later

This video explains the very basics of Ownership in PGA DFS Hi – We like playing Fantasy Golf. It is fun for us! We don’t play for a lot of money, maybe $20 max a week. We don’t pay for picks or services. We just watch golf and use our gut to make picks. Chad and Eric play on DraftKings. In this video Chad will explain why Ownership is important to consider when playing contests on DraftKings… First off I know, this is SUPER basic stuff: Ownership is much more important when playing giant GPPs vs Cash games… This might be obvious: Knowing who will be popular and who is being overlooked can shine light on value. Why though? No one knows anything. Experts may know stats and things, but they simply aren’t able to predict the future. What do we mean??? Athlete performance is unpredictable. This is proven week in and week out. Good are bad; Bad are good. Things happen. Performance of athletes across all sports is inconsistent. ESPECIALLY in golf. Specifically in the performance of a golfers Irons for example or Putter… Irons tend to be more consistent from week to week, but… one day you can be on fire with the putter, the next day you’re awful. That is golf. This applies to everyone: Tiger, Rory, JT, James Hahn. Anyone. You, Eric, me. So! When can we use this to our advantage? When the betting public, who, remember is bad at predicting things, has too much confidence in a play or player, … groupthink has stifled people’s ability to think creatively and for themselves… When the industry as a whole is telling everyone “Rory can’t lose” “DJ will certainly win” “Brooks is by far the best play” .. Pivot. Pick differently. Shy away from the “sure things” and remember that no one knows anything, but everyone thinks they know things… Use this against the other DFS players in large contests. Select a couple golfers in your player pool that no one else likes. Create unique rosters. This brings me to the next point about ownership… Ownership is important with overall roster construction. Using popular plays, chalk, or clicking names that have positive sentiment is perfectly fine and sometimes hard to avoid. Some good names are popular for a good reason, they are hot, love the course, low priced and hard to ignore. Use them. A player who is highly owned by the industry doesn’t mean they are automatically a fade/ someone to avoid rostering. Determining the right chalk fades and low owned pivots is what we try to do every week on the Fantasy Golf Pod. That is the name of the DFS game. Simply position yourself that has a roster or maybe just 1 player that is just a little different and unique that can help push you to placing in the payouts. Don’t be afraid to take chances. DFS is about making calculated risks. Scared money doesn’t make money. Playing all of the popular names you’ve heard that week isn’t going to get you ahead of Joe Public DFS player. Where do I find ownership projections? Fantasy National has a database that users click around on and then ownership is determined that way. FanShare sports is an industry leader that takes chatter of a player in the industry and turns it into tags and then calculates ownership that way. It is absolutely an inexact science. Every week these projections are wildly inaccurate. You have to remember also, most of the industry has access to these projections and make pivots based off of them. You don’t need to pay a service to a company to project who will be most and least owned… Ask a couple of your buddies who they are betting that week; whatever names come up most often, don’t use them in DFS. Hot form can draw ownership. Course history causes clicks. Social media posts or random things can cause a players popularity to rise. If you are following Golf day to day, you will start to figure out what makes someone pop from week to week. We discuss ownership projections and our favorite pivot plays every week on our Pod – join us on Tuesdays. There are SOO many ways to play DFS. Try experimenting with different types of contests. After a while you will figure out how you like to lose your money best. Watch our weekly Pod for advice!
