An accurate, complete knowledge of black history in this country could keep misinformed folks from taking those next steps toward becoming full-blown racists.  It would also help us see the condition of our communities in the context of how they got that way.  Unfortunately, Trump and his supporters aren't interested in any of that and will do anything they can to try to bury America's sins.  It's vitally important that we don't let them do that.  We can still heal the racial divides we created through our atrocities, but we are running out of time.
