Melancholy Minutes

Why My Depression Rises in the Dark Seasons

Listen Later

You wake up and you have more life and energy than you expected. You go through your day with a little more pep in your step. You walk back into the house after a long day and wonder why it is different. You notice one major thing that wasn’t there a week ago.

The sun is still in the sky.

While this isn’t unusual with the time change in America, it is still something to consider. Depression only grows in the darkness, and these long winter months tend to make us a little more down in the dumps. Even I kill all my projects and focus on survival in the long nights.

There is no solution for this other than survival. The best thing to do is to open up about the problem. Discuss it with people who know you well, and check how you feel daily. Surviving isn’t bad. Many times it serves a great purpose. It is only when your entire life is about survival is when it is a problem.

When you find your depression times, you know what you do and how to overcome it. This episode touches on what I do when I know it is that time of the year.
