Tina Waldrom speaks with Doctor James Choung about Why Revival Matters. James is the Vice President of Strategy & Innovation for InterVarsity Christian Fellowship / USA. Revival is a big topic and one that James has not always viewed positively. In his latest book, Longing for Revival, he explains his renewed hope in revival and why it's needed. James talks about being prepared for revival, experiencing revival and leading revival. The Asbury Revival in Kentucky broke out 7 days after James recorded this interview. A timely discussion about Why Revival Matters.
When James was the evangelism director for InterVarsity USA, the ministry saw over 15,000 students make decisions to follow Jesus over that four-year span. Revival means many things for different people; the word is understood in different ways. James and his co-author Ryan Pfeiffer came up with a definition of revival that could be helpful for the ‘most of us’. He unpacks that definition in this interview and shows how revival translates corporately and individually. James is confident that believers can be expectant of revival, they can experience it and they can lead it. And most interestingly, revival can be stopped.
In this episode, James talks about revival as a season of breakthroughs. He views these breakthroughs taking place in deed, word, and power. James refers to specific passages of scripture that demonstrate these breakthroughs. A new normal of Kingdom experience and fruitfulness is the result of breakthrough. Revival starts with revived people and all revivals start small. From smaller settings it flows outward and keeps going. Revival should flow from the heart of a believer or community to those who need Christ most. People lit up by revival often lead others to Christ. This is an inspiring episode that gives a broader and clearer understating of what revival is and Why Revival Matters.
