Most Americans never learned what happened after The Civil War that ended slavery and the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect. The reconstruction era is rarely taught in schools. W.E.B Dubois calls it the era where African Americans got a brief moment in the sun before being turned back into a new type of slavery. The reconstruction period was a time where African Americans were in schools, owning land, owning businesses and into government positions, It ended with the KKK and the confederates regaining their control over African Americans and racism picked back up.
