Why the Papal Mass Destroys the Lord’s Supper | John Calvin

Deep Dive into Institutes of the Christian Religion by John Calvin - The Papal Mass, A Sacrilege by Which Christ's Supper Was Not Only Profaned but Annihilated

In his Institutes, John Calvin argues that the Roman Catholic Mass is a blasphemous sacrilege that attempts to erase and annul the true Lord's Supper. He contends that the Mass insults Christ by establishing human priests as His successors, ignoring that Christ is the eternal High Priest who requires no replacement. Calvin posits that if Christ is sacrificed daily in the Mass, it implies His original sacrifice on the cross was imperfect, whereas Scripture affirms Christ died "once for all" to secure eternal redemption. Consequently, the Mass effectively buries the cross by suggesting that Christ’s work must be repeated, which logically implies He must die repeatedly.

Calvin distinguishes between propitiatory sacrifices, which appease God, and sacrifices of thanksgiving. He maintains that Christ alone performed the unique propitiatory sacrifice. By claiming the Mass is an offering that merits forgiveness, the Roman church robs believers of the benefit of Christ's death, teaching them to rely on a new oblation rather than the finished work of the cross. True Christian sacrifice, according to Calvin, consists only of praise, prayer, and self-dedication, termed a "sacrifice of thanksgiving".

Furthermore, Calvin rejects "private masses" where priests partake alone, arguing that this practice destroys the communal nature of the Lord's Supper, which Christ commanded to be divided among believers. He dismisses the claim that early church fathers supported the Mass, noting that they used the term "sacrifice" to mean a memorial of Christ’s death rather than a new atonement. Ultimately, Calvin concludes that the church must adhere strictly to the two sacraments instituted by God—Baptism and the Lord's Supper—and rejects the Mass as a human invention that obscures the gospel.
