The Sahel of Africa is a swathe of land between the Sahara to the north and the savanna grasslands to the south. It is a troubled land, ravaged by the effects of climate change, water and food insecurity, massive population growth and massive unemployment. A perfect cauldron for recruitment to violent legions. Indeed the West African Sahel has become the epicentre for global Islamic terrorism.
