Last night my partner asked me to rub her calf. She said all the right things while she asked — that I’m her favorite person, that she loves me.
And I still felt dysregulation rise up underneath it.
She did nothing wrong. There was no hidden agenda, no manipulation. And still, my nervous system manufactured a threat. That’s the part we don’t want to admit — we want the work to be external. We want to believe if they just said it differently, we wouldn’t have felt this way.
But the trigger was never actually about the moment. It was about every moment before it that taught my body what love came with strings attached. And if I make my partner responsible for healing a wound she didn’t cause, I will keep being disappointed — because she can’t heal it. Only I can.
This talk is about what I chose in that moment, why the work is always within — even when the other person did nothing wrong — and what it means to stop waiting for someone perfect enough that you never feel triggered again. Relationships are mirrors. Conscious relationships aren’t about never fighting. They’re about both people being willing to own their 50%.
Can you imagine the peace that would come from that?
