Why Trump's 'flood the zone' strategy is working

Media Malaise: The Dangerous Normalization of Trump’s Second Term

Subverting Democracy with Silence

Margaret Sullivan’s recent critique in The Guardian US paints a dire picture of mainstream media’s approach to President Trump’s second term, which she describes as marked by corruption and chaos. Instead of maintaining rigorous scrutiny, major newsrooms are treating Trump’s scandals as routine political theater. This normalization of the extraordinary not only diminishes the role of journalism in democratic governance but actively aids in the erosion of democratic norms.

Institutional Power and Deliberate Distraction

Who holds the power here? Clearly, it’s the media institutions and their editorial choices. They decide the duration and depth of the coverage or the lack thereof. President Trump, with his barrage of scandals, employs a “flood the zone” strategy, overwhelming the media and ensuring that no single issue receives prolonged attention. However, the failure to critically engage with these issues lies squarely with media executives who prioritize ratings and revenue over civic duty.

Misdirection and Minimization

Sullivan notes that Trump’s $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization fund,” potentially benefitting January 6 rioters, and other abuses of power were quickly glossed over by mainstream outlets. NBC and Fox News are named for their particularly fleeting or biased coverage. This reflects a broader pattern of misdirecting public attention by either downplaying the severity of these actions or shifting focus swiftly to lesser controversies. Such editorial decisions mask the real stakes of Trump’s actions and policies.

The Role of Corporate Incentives

The structural factors at play are primarily economic. Advertising-driven revenue models incentivize sensationalism over depth. As Trump generates high viewership, networks are motivated to cover him extensively but superficially. This business model directly undermines the media’s supposed role as a watchdog, trading investigative rigor for superficial engagement.

Independent Journalism as a Beacon

In contrast, independent media and platforms like Substack have taken up the mantle of detailed investigative journalism. They delve into specific abuses like the misuse of taxpayer money and the operational details of the slush fund, offering the thematic reporting that mainstream media shies away from. Unfortunately, such critical reporting reaches only those already engaged and aware, failing to penetrate the broader public consciousness that mainstream channels cater to.

Conclusion: The Cost of Editorial Cowardice

The normalization of Trump’s second term is a striking example of editorial cowardice. Mainstream media’s deference to Trump not only misdirects public understanding but actively participates in the degradation of U.S. democracy. By choosing ratings over truth, these institutions forsake their duty to inform and challenge power. The broader implication is clear: a democracy cannot function without a free press willing to hold the powerful accountable. As long as corporate media remains complicit in this superficial coverage, the systematic dismantling of democratic norms and the abuse of power for personal gain will continue unchecked.
