Overview: There is confusion about baptism. Sadly, there are arguments about what the actual word -baptise- means, but more than that, there is confusion about what baptism signifies. We will start by considering what baptism is not. It is not a ritual you undergo in order to make yourself right with God. So then, what is baptism- Baptism is when a Christian's new faith goes public. Genuine faith is not alone, genuine faith works. There is no category in the bible for a Christian who is not baptised. True Christians go public. Baptism also helps Christians. It functions by giving you assurance of salvation. it is a church act, not something someone can do alone. Is pictures what God has done for the Christian through Christ--forgiven, buried with Christ, raised with Christ- it is also a sign that you have been united with Christ. It actually pictures the fact that believers are in Christ. Then, it clearly shows the believer's relationship to sin. he died to it and it shows in his life. Finally, we were resurrected with Christ- We came up out of the water, showing us coming out of death with Jesus- God accepted Jesus, so God accepts me. That is the faith that is going public in the act of baptism.
