The Womens Wellness Show

Why We Need to Separate Fitness And Sport

Listen Later

Leo is joined by Ash Grossman of The Training Stimulus, who specialises in working with athletes on a biomechanical level in order to improve performance.

Ash talks about the methodologies behind optimising mechanics and anatomy, why he found his way into coaching and the personal challenges it solved, and why turning fitness into a game might be counterproductive to people in search of wellness.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Especially in the fitness industry, when new ideas are established, the tendency is to take it to the extreme, which gamifies the process due to social media and the need for oneupmanship.
  • Winning and competing are very different goals. If you're trying to be as strong as possible, there will be an inflection point where your health and longevity and negatively affected.
  • When we injure ourselves it is simply because the tolerance of our tissues has been exceeded. We have asked too much of one specific structure. The situations when this happens are when the muscle has been ill-prepared for the demands placed upon it.
  • We must not assume our fitness state based upon headlines or what we consume. Our personal levels of wellbeing are unique to us, and do not depend on whether or not we eat carbs or get eight hours of sleep per night.

BEST MOMENTS

'I got into coaching to basically solve my own problem'

'Talk to the body'

'Now that fitness has become a sport, it's become a very confusing space'

'Olympians are not the pinnacle of health. They're the pinnacle of athleticism and performance'
