A woman’s superego tends to be her significant male other’s superego. Her superego is externalized, to borrow a point made by an ex-girlfriend of mine. And when she is dominated by her boyfriend, it registers in her mind as a safety-signal; for the significance to her of being thus dominated is that her psyche is being given the structural reinforcement of a functioning conscience.
