I give Paul Lockhart's book A Mathematician's Lament five stars because he dares to confront the prevailing school system's approach to teaching and learning math. 

When you realise, as Paul Lockhart says, that math is an art, then you begin to be in awe of how math works and that's when math starts to have meaning outside of school.
