Deep Dive into Wicked Men Useful in Their Destruction Only by Jonathan Edwards

Jonathan Edwards, in his sermon based on Ezekiel 15, presents the doctrine that if men do not bring forth fruit to God, they are entirely useless except in their destruction. He uses the biblical analogy of a vine tree to illustrate this point. While a fruitful vine is highly valued, a barren vine yields wood that is too weak for any practical work and is only fit to be cast into the fire for fuel.

Edwards argues that mankind can only be useful in two ways: actively or passively. Because man is the highest creature in the earthly order, created with rational faculties directly subordinate to God, his sole active usefulness lies in glorifying his Creator. Any earthly achievements or social contributions are ultimately meaningless if they do not serve this supreme purpose. Therefore, if a person fails to actively honor God, they must be made passively useful through their destruction.

According to Edwards, it is unfit for unfruitful individuals to continually consume the blessings of the earth, as all creation groans under the burden of serving the wicked. Furthermore, they are completely unsuited for heaven, as its holy environment and spiritual employments would be repugnant to carnal minds. Thus, God makes the wicked useful by destroying them, which serves to glorify His majestic power and vindictive justice. Additionally, witnessing this destruction heightens the joy of the saints in heaven, giving them a profound appreciation for God's sovereign grace and their own salvation.

Edwards concludes by challenging his audience to examine their true motives, warning that religious duties performed merely out of custom or fear of hell do not constitute true fruit. He exhorts his listeners to actively glorify God to avoid being cast into hell, which he describes as the only appropriate receptacle for barren branches.
