History At The OK Corral

Wild Bill Hickok vs. Davis Tutt : The Original Wild West Shootout

Listen Later

In the annals of Old West History, few- if any- men can lay claim to as much influence over the cultural landscape of the time as Wild Bill Hicock. He was the prototype for the late-19th century American frontiersman, equally capable on the trail, at the poker table, or in a gunfight.

That vaunted reputation began one summer evening in Springfield, Missouri in the year 1865. Hickok and his one-time friend Davis Tutt had come to a disagreement over a dispute regarding a loan Tutt had given to Hickok. Under his own financial strain, Tutt applied undue pressure to Hickok, known to be a trustworthy man, repay him immediately.

As collateral, he had taken Hickok’s prized gold pocket watch, and, to add insult to injury, had walked around the town of Springfield decrying Hickok as a less-than-reputable man. In the end, the result would culminate in the first- and one of the only- instances of a one-on-one shootout in the streets of the Old West.
