On Feb. 28, 2021, Israeli health officials warned the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) about a "large number" of myocarditis cases in Israel following COVID-19 vaccination.   By this point in the pandemic, the U.S. government bought 1.2 billion doses of COVID-19 vaccines. It cost $17 billion.   And when myocarditis was flagged as a potential side effect, only 7 percent of these COVID-19 doses were given out.   U.S. health officials could have paused the vaccination program. They could have tried to investigate myocarditis further. Instead, the CDC told Americans that vaccination was “our way out of this pandemic.”   Mothers like Emily Ekanayake trusted the CDC. She saw the Israeli report about myocarditis too. But she believed the CDC—that the benefits outweighed the risks.   So on June 10, 2021, Ms. Ekanayake's 14-year-old son Aiden got his second Pfizer COVID-19 dose.   Two days later, Aiden woke up in the middle of the night with intense chest pain.
