William Bradford and The Mayflower Compact

William Bradford was an English Puritan who made great sacrifices for religious freedom. Born in 1590 in Austerfield, England, he joined the Separatist movement and later fled persecution by moving with fellow believers to Holland. In 1620 he helped lead the Pilgrims to America aboard the Mayflower, helped write the Mayflower Compact, and helped establish Plymouth Colony. Bradford served as governor for many years and recorded the colony’s early history in his book Of Plymouth Plantation, leaving an important account of the Pilgrims’ struggles and faith.
