Born the son of Texas slaves, William Henry Ellis was the epitome of the self-made man. So self-made in fact that he even changed his name to Guillermo Enrique Eliseo and his ancestry to Mexican. He built up a financial empire based on cattle, hides and wool, then set out on his most audacious plan: to establish an African American colony in northern Mexico. Today we tell his story.
