In this episode, we visit with writer David Meule about his new book about the precode films of director William Wellman. We handpicked a few films to discuss in detail. Night Nurse and The Public Enemy were the biggest of this period for Wellman. We talk in length about them. We also talk about themes and why in some ways William Wellman was a pioneer and how his signature tends to be on all of his films. Wellman was part of the studio system tbh demanded movies to be made quickly but we talk about how William Wellman somehow developed a brand for himself during this period. Thanks for listening!
