A few takeaways after listening to Coach Bill Belichick
* Regret is more painful than preparation.
It’s easy after the fact to say it was someone else’s fault you didn’t win. But were you really prepared? Did you put in the work? Or are you just telling yourself a story to feel better? Preparation hurts now. Regret lasts forever.
* Work isn’t about time. It’s about impact.
A player can come in, put on their gear, and run around. But did they have an impact? Did they improve? Did they help the team improve? I don’t care how long you worked. I care what you did.
* You can’t win until you keep from losing.
Eliminate the self-inflicted wounds. Pre-snap penalties. Late hits. Missed assignments. We may want to win, but what are we doing that keeps us from it? What flaws need fixing before we even have a shot?
* Stack good days.
Big moments are won by winning the little ones. If you want to do something great, you have to do the small things right. Maybe for a long time, before anything big ever happens. Win small.
* No one but you cares about your title.
Do your job. Not your future one. Not the one you think you deserve. The one in front of you. If you’re too focused on your LinkedIn or your next resume refresh, then you’re not putting your effort into what’s right in front of you. Titles don’t matter. Execution does.
* Discipline is doing the right thing every time.
Not just when it’s easy. Not just when someone’s watching. Every time. Do you put the shopping cart back? The stuff no one sees. That’s where champions show up.
Take care. Be good.
