Outmatched. Outnumbered. Overwhelmed. This is sometimes exactly where God wants us in order for us to win. Scripture is filled with warfare. Many times we find that God’s people seem to be dwarfed by their opposition. The student of Scripture must conclude that God rarely ordains easy wins in the most important battles. In the end, He fulfills His promises for victory in all the battles He assigns to us, but we all must learn what it means to win God’s way. Gideon’s battle against the fierce Midianites is one such battle. God reduces Gideon’s outward strengths to the point where it almost seems cruel. Then, God compels His servant to trust, step forth, and obey. The result is one of the most captivating wins in all of the Old Testament. From Gideon’s victory, we learn how to submit our own wisdom to God’s ways, and walk out the impossibly intimidating assignments He sometimes hands to us. Winning is guaranteed, but we must learn repeatedly to do it all God’s way.
