Winning Without Losing the Human Side with Speed Skating Canada

Listen Later

Welcome back to another episode of the Sporting Change Podcast.

About a month ago, the Future of Sport Commission released its report—over a thousand pages—and the headline was hard to ignore: Canadian sport is broken. Heavy stuff. And honestly, when you hear that, it can feel a bit overwhelming… like where do we even go from here?

So today, we wanted to shift the lens a little. Because while there are real challenges in the system, there are also examples of what’s working—organizations that are getting it right.

And one of those is Speed Skating Canada.

Not only are they our most decorated sport organization across both Winter and Summer Olympics—which is pretty incredible on its own—but recent research also highlighted something even more important: a strong, intentional culture. One that focuses not just on performance, but on people.

That research was led by Dr. Katrina Monton. She’s a faculty member in Organizational Psychology at Rutgers University and the Director of Experiential Learning. Her work looks at high-performance environments and how they can drive excellence without sacrificing well-being. She’s worked across sport, healthcare, and the military, helping organizations build cultures where people can actually thrive—not just perform.

And joining her today is Alexandra Proulx, Speed Skating Canada’s Manager of Culture and Safe Sport. Since 2021, she’s been at the forefront of reshaping how the organization approaches athlete well-being, inclusion, and overall culture. Her experience spans major international events and national initiatives, all centered around making sport safer and more human-first.

This is a conversation about what it really takes to build a healthy, high-performance culture—and what the rest of the sport system can learn from it.

Enjoy the show.
