"Wintertime Bites on Lake Fork: Largemouth, Crappie, and Lure Strategies for a Stellar Day on the Water"

Listen Later

As of December 27, 2024, here’s the latest fishing report for Lake Fork, Texas.

First, let's set the scene: Lake Fork's water temperature has dropped into the upper 50s, which is ideal for winter fishing. The water level is 2.34 feet below pool, and it's stained, but that's not hindering the fish activity.

For those planning to head out, sunrise is at 7:06 AM, and sunset will be at 5:37 PM. Although Lake Fork is a freshwater lake and doesn't have tides, the cooler water temperatures are bringing the bigger fish out.

Yesterday saw good catches of largemouth bass, particularly around big wood structures near depth changes like creeks and ditches in 5-7 feet of water. Viper XP jigs and Texas rigs were highly effective in these areas. Around docks in 3-6 feet, squarebill crankbaits and chatterbaits were the go-to lures. For those targeting deeper fish, Carolina rigs on long points in 8-15 feet were productive.

Crappie fishing was also strong, with big numbers of black crappie found at the base of shallow trees in 12-18 feet in the mid-lake areas. White crappie were suspended halfway down these trees. In deeper water, the black crappie were higher on the trees, while the white crappie were further down. Small hand-tied jigs and minnows were working extremely well.

For hot spots, focus on creek bends and drop-offs, especially where shad are concentrated. One good area is near the main creek channel, where you'll find points with standing timber that can push shad up, making them attractive to bass. Another spot is around the rounded clay points, which can be plain but are known to attract fish during the shad spawn.

Overall, it's a great time to be out on Lake Fork, with the cooler water bringing out the bigger fish and a variety of effective lures and techniques to try.
