2 Chronicles 16:13-14 KJVS
And Asa slept with his fathers, and died in the one and fortieth year of his reign. [14] And they buried him in his own sepulchres, which he had made for himself in the city of David, and laid him in the bed which was filled with sweet odours and divers kinds of spices prepared by the apothecaries' art: and they made a very great burning for him.
An apothecary is an archaic word for a person who prepared and sold medicines and drugs. In the Bible, we find that God and kings of nations will often request the work of specialists in making things for the house of God or for their palaces. Certainly, the work of a specialist is a work of high quality. The work of an expert or someone who is specialised unto a particular output can be trusted and is to be greatly desired. For example, special artists ( Bezaleel and Aholiab) were recruited and filled with God’s wisdom for the work of building the ark of God and the tabernacle in Moses’ day ( Exodus 31; 35:30,35).
Similarly, when it comes to medicines and how to put them together and to administer them for high quality results of healing and preservation for those who use them, there is special wisdom that God gives to people who are set apart for that line of work.
1. A GREAT LIGHT: When King Asa died, they laid him in his own tomb, on a bed lovingly and professionally filled with perfumes and special spices by specialist apothecaries, substances that made a great burning (fire, light, announcement, message) of him even in death.
The work of an apothecary is to announce victory over death. The message of victory over death, even the message of God’s resurrection power, is a very great light.
Isaiah 9:2 KJVS
The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.
John 19:39-40 KJVS
And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight. [40] Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.
Jesus body was wrapped up in spices to preserve him in his burial. The work of an apothecary has an advantage over death and decay. It is a great light in the land of the shadow of death.
2. SAVING HEALTH: The work of healthcare ministers is to bring real healing and powerful attempts at preventing or overcoming disease and death. If the art of an apothecary does not bring healing and preservation, it is not godly or holy, because it is not set apart for God’s use. God’s use of herbs and drugs is for the healing of the nations, to lead them unto salvation.
Psalm 67:2 KJVS
That thy way may be known upon earth, thy saving health among all nations.
Revelation 22:2 KJVS
In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.
3. HOLY HEALING: God gives special wisdom for the making, mixing and administration of drugs and medicines. It is a powerful thing to know what is wrong with someone when they are ill, but what to do for them or what medicine to give to them to get them totally well is a completely different art and science altogether. It takes a special grace to know exactly what to do to get a sick person well and whole. God gives special wisdom for the apothecaries’ art. God gives special wisdom to people who are called serve others with healing.
When the Lord Himself is involved in the work of an apothecary, whatever medical or medicinal products issue are holy. Something is declared holy just because it is chosen by God and set apart for only God’s use. That’s what holiness is. Can your line of work, secular as it may be called,...
