The Basin and Towel

Wise Men Again? Sermon for February 1, 2026

Listen Later

Welcome back to the Basin and Towel podcast!  I’m your host, Pastor Chris Cahill.  I live in Lodi, Ohio, where last year I retired from 45 years of pastoral ministry in the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. In my retirement I’ve been doing some substitute preaching in other churches - this episode is the sermon I preached on Sunday, February 1, 2026, at Faith Lutheran Church in Avon, Ohio.

Can you believe it’s been less than six weeks since Christmas? Wow! Everyone moved on so quickly! The very next day after Christmas, stores restocked their shelves for Valentine’s Day, TV programming focused on New Year’s Eve and football playoffs, all kinds of people went back to work and school and whatever else they were doing before Christmas, and it’s like nothing has changed. On top of that, January has been a long month of chaos, fear, and anger in the news, snow on the ground, and subzero wind in the air. And today is the eve of the day when we’re eager to pin all our hopes and dreams of better days to come on the prophetic abilities of . . . a groundhog!Did the birth of Jesus really have so little effect on us and our world? Or do we collectively have the attention span of goldfish? Or - and this may be the saddest thing - was His birth never that important to begin with?

This week’s readings from God’s word were Micah 6:1–8, 1 Corinthians 1:18–31, and Matthew 5:1–12
