Publisher's Summary:
From best-selling author and master storyteller David Baldacci, Wish You Well is a dramatic and enthralling tale of family unity in the face of adversity.
Tragedy strikes the New York-based Cardinal family when their car is involved in a terrible accident. Twelve-year-old Lou and seven-year-old Oz survive, but the crash leaves their father dead and their mother in a coma. It would seem their world has been shattered forever until their great-grandmother, Louisa Mae, agrees to raise the children on her Virginia mountain farm.
But before long their rural idyll is threatened by the discovery of natural gas on the mountain. Determined to protect her home from the ravages of big business, Louisa Mae refuses to sell, but when the neighbours hear of the potential wealth the company could bring, they begin to turn against her. And now the Cardinal family find themselves ensnared in another battle, to be played out in a crowded Virginia courtroom: a battle for justice, for survival, and for the right to stay together in the only place they know as home.
Filled with both rich humour and desperate poignancy, Wish You Well is a tale of family, faith, humanity and prejudice, set against the magical backdrop of the Virginia high rock. Baldacci triumphs with his best novel yet, an utterly captivating drama.

Written for movie
I wasn't very taken with this book. The ending, in particular, was a little too "written for movies" for me. Too many coincidences, all coming happily together in the end. Kind of schmaltzy.
Good story, but....
Excellent story. Ordered the hardback. The ink on some pages were barely visible and some pages were "folded". Edges of pages were probably made rough (give an old look), but, was hard to turn.

Excellent story of a young girl coming of age in the beautiful Virginia mountains. A far cry from this well known best selling author's suspense novels. Told with gentle prosaic words and beautiful descriptive style, one can imagine and sense the wonder of the beautiful Virginia landscape. I had read this year's ago and I bought it for my teenage granddaughter who reminded me of three main character. And, I loved the inclusion of Baldacci,s family history and photos. Knowing ones roots and family history is very important, as is passing it on. I've begun a family tree to leave for my family.
Excellent writing but a slow read
Excellent writing but a slow read. May be a great took for teens and young adults as it reflects on a life style that really built character.
I LOVED IT - IT MADE ME CRY
I love David Baldacci's books and was intrigued to see that he wrote a book that was anything other than a fast-paced adventure. This book was so lovingly crafted and so descriptive that it reminded me of "To Kill A Mockingbird" which is one of my favorite books of all time. Lou and Oz are almost orphans after their father is killed in an auto accident and their mother is left in a brain damaged catatonic state. The three of them are sent to the Virginia mountains to live with the children's great grandmother, Louisa Mae Cardinal, after whom Lou was named. Louisa had also raised Lou and Oz's father and Lou bore a striking resemblance to her great grandmother. The year was 1940 and the children moved from New York City to far less sophisticated rural Virginia on a mountain in the Appalachians.
