In Commerce City, CO last week, Portland Thorns FC forward Sophie Smith made it two goals in a row, six minutes apart, assisted by Rose Lavelle, in the first of the two friendly games against Colombia. These were followed by San Diego Wave FC midfielder Taylor Kornieck scoring in her debut game with the perfect header off Megan Rapinoe’s serve. It was a tepid first half for the US even against a weak opposition but clearly words were spoken in the locker room for the US to come out with renewed focus and precision in their attacking line.  The second game in Utah saw a veteran starting line-up  and it was seasoned Washington Spirit defender Kelley O’Hara who slammed one in the back of the net in the 77th minute to add to an own goal in. the first half, which gave the US a 2-0 win. Shout out to North Carolina Courage defender Carson Pickett who is the first ever player with a limb difference to earn a USWNT cap. The 28 year old from South Carolina was born without a left forearm and hand. The squad now head to the 2022 CONCACAF Championship in Mexico for the 2023 World Cup and 2024 Paris Olympic Games qualifying games, which begin on July 4 against Haiti followed by Jamaica on the 7th and Mexico on the 11th.
